KATHRYN BIGELOW RECEIVES SHOWEST TRIUMPH AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING DIRECTION

SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT TO RELEASE “THE HURT LOCKER” ON JUNE 26, 2009
Kathryn Bigelow was honored with the ShoWest Triumph Award for Outstanding Direction. Bigelow was presented with the award at a special luncheon “Celebrating the Importance of Independent and Specialty Film” on Thursday, April 2, at Bally’s and Paris Las Vegas.
“Kathryn Bigelow’s career has spanned over two decades and nine films which showcase her instinctive artistry. From her earliest projects to her landmark war thriller, ‘The Hurt Locker,’ Kathryn touches each film she directs with a clarity that is unprecedented.  It is with great respect and admiration that we award Kathryn Bigelow with this year’s Triumph Award for Outstanding Direction", said  Mitch Neuhauser, co-managing director of ShoWest, which was  held March 30-April 2, 2009, in Las Vegas.

Releasing on June 26, 2009, “The Hurt Locker” is a riveting portrait of the courage under fire of the military’s unrecognized heroes:  the technicians of a bomb squad who volunteer to challenge the odds and save lives doing one of the world’s most dangerous jobs.  When a new Staff Sergeant, William James (Jeremy Renner), takes over a team in the midst of combat, he shocks his subordinates, Sanborn and Eldridge (Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty), by what seems like his reckless disregard for basic safety measures.  And yet, in the fog of war, appearances are never reliable.  Is James really a swaggering cowboy who lives for peak experiences when the margin of error is zero – or is he a consummate professional with a high-wire craft?  As the fiery chaos threatens to engulf them, the men struggle to understand and contain their new leader long enough for them to make it home.

With a visual and emotional intensity that makes audiences feel like they have been transported to the dizzying, 24/7 turmoil of life in the bomb squad, “The Hurt Locker” is both a gripping portrayal of real-life heroism, and a probing, layered, study of the soul-numbing rigors and potent allure of the modern battlefield.

Known for breaking cinematic ground with intensely original visuals and cutting-edge subjects, Kathryn Bigelow has distinguished herself as one of Hollywood’s most innovative filmmakers. Her critically lauded body of work includes such cult-classics as the vampire-western “Near Dark” and the action-heist “Point Break,” as well as the science fiction thriller “Strange Days, and the cold-war submarine drama “K:19 The Widowmaker.”
